I had so much fun making this horse out of a Breyer Ruffian back in the day. She was my interpretation of a particular very hot pony in the barn, named Kitten, and the filler is all wood dough.
She is the precursor to a piece I made later, Star Attraction, who was the model I WANTED to make when I made this one, but didn’t have the skills for.
This is my most vintage, a Cigar painted by Judy Renee Pope in 1998. He was a NAN top ten TB for his previous owner. I also lusted after him back in the early days of the internet and hobby geocities pages. 😆 I still haul him off to live shows occasionally, just because I love him so much, even if he’s not super competitive these days. He’s also displayed next to my Elizabeth Bouras dapple grey Kelso. I still can’t believe that I have a horse from two of my early idols. 🥰
Also, pardon the really crappy quality picture. But this is MY very first custom, from about 2000, using the Breyer painting kit. I have stripped almost every other early custom, but this girl will stick around to show me how far I’ve come.
Wow, what a treasure that Judy Renee Pope piece is!
And I also will keep my first custom forever. ❤️
This is a stablemate I did as a custom order for Nora Doyle back in the 1980s. I understand her collection did not survive her. She had a few of my models. We corresponded for years and my day was always brighter when I got a letter from her in the mailbox.
Cadfael’s Cygnet was a SM QH mare refined a bit, and painted dappled grey in oils with a braided hair mane and tail.
What is the cutoff for “vintage” era here? I think my oldest in my collection are probably early 00’s. :)
I think people have been using either 2000 or 20 years, but this is just a fun thread, so it hardly matters. Share what you like! Or starting a new thread of My First Custom is fun too!
This is Star Attraction, my echo of the blood bay Ruffian in the OP, made a decade or so later:
